Vijay Faces Setback in Madras High Court

The court reached its verdict regarding actor Vijay who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam political party. The court dismissed his petition that challenged a penalty imposed by the Income Tax Department. The court delivered its decision after keeping the case pending from last month.

Background of the Case

• The Income Tax Department issued notices to Vijay for the financial year 2015–16. The department demanded a penalty of ₹1.50 crore. Vijay filed a petition in the Madras High Court in 2022 to challenge this penalty.
• The High Court refused Vijay's request after hearing both arguments because it supported the department's judgment.

Reason for the Income Tax Penalty

• The Income Tax Department states that Vijay declared an income of ₹35 crore for the financial year 2015–16 in his tax return. Officials analyzed the documents which they seized during their search of his home during assessment proceedings.
• The department stated that Vijay did not declare an additional income of ₹15 crore. This amount was reportedly received for his role in the film Puli. The department determined that Vijay concealed his income which led to a penalty of ₹1.50 crore.
• The High Court ruled in favor of the Income Tax Department after Vijay challenged the penalty order in court.

Update on Vijay’s Upcoming Film

Vijay's upcoming film Jana Nayagan has encountered problems which develop separately from other issues. The film was scheduled for release on January 9 but has been postponed due to censorship-related concerns. The makers have not yet announced a new release date.
