NOTAM Issued Over Bay of Bengal Ahead of Possible Missile Tests
The Indian government has issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) for air operations in the Bay of Bengal region. The airlines received notice that all flights would be prohibited throughout the 3,190-kilometer zone which extends over the Bay of Bengal from February 5 to February 6. The restricted area which previously extended 2,530 kilometers has now been extended to 3,190 kilometers.
Reason for the NOTAM
Planned missile testing operations will lead to airspace restrictions according to English media reports. The reports state that no civilian aircraft will be permitted to enter the area because of a sea-based missile test. The Indian government has not confirmed any missile launch officially.
India has increased its weapons production capacity and expanded its weapons development programs since Operation Sindhur. The organization is currently conducting multiple missile tests to advance its objectives.
What is a NOTAM?
A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) serves as an official announcement which provides information to both military and civil aviation. The system informs pilots about existing hazards which affect their flight paths within designated airspace during specified times. The government uses NOTAMs to declare official announcements which include missile tests and rocket launches and military operations and wartime conditions.
