Foreign Education Sees Sharp Decline Among Indian Students

- The number of Indian students who study abroad has shown a decline according to recent data. The Union Education Ministry reports that 31 percent of students who studied abroad in the past two years have decreased. Sukanta Majumdar the State education minister provided this information to the Rajya Sabha through his written response.
- About 9.08 lakh Indian students went abroad for higher education in 2023. The number decreased to 7.7 lakh in 2024. The number declined further to 6.26 lakh in 2025. The data shows a steady downward trend.
- The minister explained that studying abroad is a personal decision. Students choose to study abroad based on their total expenses and loan options and their academic preferences. The researcher claims that Indians who achieve success abroad continue to benefit India. The government continues efforts to engage and support such individuals.
- The government operates programs which aim to improve educational quality in higher education institutions throughout India. The National Education Policy NEP 2020introduced multiple reforms which aim to improve academic quality. The country aims to deliver high-quality education throughout its territory.
- The government has also permitted foreign universities to establish educational facilities throughout India. The government intends to provide international-level educational programs through this initiative. The Indian government has approved 14 foreign educational institutions to begin operations in India.
