World Test Championship Final 2023: Can India Qualify For Final Even If Australia Win 4th Test

Australia won the third Test against India in Indore, securing their place in the ICC World Test Championship championship match. India is second in the WTC points standings and has a 2-1 series advantage, but they aren't assured to advance to the championship game. In addition to India, Sri Lanka, which is now in third place, is still competing. Next up for the Lankans is a two-match series against New Zealand, which, if won, would guarantee them a spot in the summit showdown versus the Australians. After winning the first two games in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India greatly improved their prospects of qualifying, but a defeat in the match against Indore somewhat slowed down their momentum. Even if the damage wasn't severe, India must win the test in Ahmedabad to maintain control of the situation. How can India qualify for the World Test Championship final?

1. A victory against Australia in the 4th Test would automatically earn India the ticket to the World Test Championship final. With a PCT of 60.29, India sits comfortably ahead of Sri Lanka (PCT of 53.33%) in the standings. With a win, India will be assured of a place in the final, no matter the result of the Sri Lanka-New Zealand Test series.

2. In case India only draws the 4th Test, Sri Lanka can usurp them with a 2-0 sweep against New Zealand. Anything less than a clean sweep would see the islanders remain third in the WTC points table.

3. If the Indore Test result repeats in Ahmedabad, India could be eliminated from the WTC final race. But, for such a development to take place, Sri Lanka would need to win both of their matches against New Zealand.
