Al Nassr against PSG The final Ronaldo-Messi match, or a fresh start?
A joint Al Hilal-Al Nassr club led by Cristiano Ronaldo will face Lionel Messi's Paris St. Germain in an exhibition game, but given the rumours that Messi will also be heading to Saudi Arabia, could this be the start of a new chapter in the rivalry?
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's rivalry dominated football for more than ten years, and the world will get the chance to see another match between the Argentine and the Portuguese on Thursday. This matchup may not be the last between the two players.
Ronaldo, who spent 20 years playing in Europe's top divisions, has gone to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia after his contract with Manchester United expired. Ironically, his first game in the Middle East will pit him against an old foe.
Ronaldo and Messi have an opportunity to reignite their old "El Clasico" rivalry from when they were playing for Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, when Messi's Paris St. Germain take against a combined Al Hilal-Al Nassr club in an exhibition game.
There is rumour that Al Hilal intend to recruit Messi to Saudi Arabia when his PSG contract expires at the conclusion of the season since the 35-year-old has nothing left to prove in Europe or on the international scene.
Saudi Arabia's Minister of Finance, Mohammed Al-Jadaan, recently said that Saudi teams were free to try to recruit both of soccer's best names.
When questioned about Ronaldo or Messi relocating there, he responded to CNBC, "Well, we spoke about it before and the quality of life is a crucial component of the 2030 vision, and the quality of life in Saudi Arabia has increased; sports are a major part of that."
Anything we can do to develop this business would pay off and better not just the lives of our people but also those of the working people from outside, according to the youthful population of Saudi Arabia.
Luka Modric of Real Madrid broke Messi and Ronaldo's monopoly on the Ballon d'Or awards in 2017. Since then, the Argentine has won two more awards, giving him a 7-5 advantage over his Portuguese counterpart in the contest to be the best player in the world.
Manchester United and Barcelona drew 0-0 in their debut Champions League match as youthful upstarts trying to make their mark in 2008.
Since that time, they have never participated in a goalless draw for their clubs or national teams in historic games that drew in millions of viewers to watch the greats in their prime.
The two were the centre of attention at the World Cup in Qatar last year, but Messi won the championship while Ronaldo slumped and didn't start for Portugal in the knockout rounds after they were ousted in the quarterfinals.
Messi ended with seven goals, becoming the first player ever to score in every World Cup round, concluded with a trophy collection, and was crowned player of the competition.
The match between the two biggest modern-day icons of the sport on Thursday may herald the start of a new era in Asian football should the Argentine go to Saudi Arabia.
