Overview of the New Cancellation Policy
Indian Railways has updated its ticket cancellation rules. The refund amount now depends on how early the passenger cancels the ticket before the train’s departure time.
The system operates through distinct time-based classifications. Passengers who cancel earlier receive higher refunds. Passengers who cancel their tickets after the designated time will experience either total deduction of their fare or they will receive no reimbursement.
- Refund Rules Based On Cancellation Time
- Cancellation 72 Hours Before Departure
If a passenger cancels a confirmed ticket at least 72 hours before departure:
- A maximum refund is provided
- Only a small cancellation fee is deducted
- The remaining amount is refunded
- Cancellation Between 72 and 24 Hours
If a ticket is cancelled between 72 hours and 24 hours before departure:
- A standard penalty applies
- 25% of the ticket fare is deducted
- The remaining amount is refunded (minimum charge may apply)
- Cancellation Between 24 and 8 Hours
If a ticket is cancelled between 24 hours and 8 hours before departure:
- It is treated as a late cancellation
- 50% of the ticket fare is deducted
- The remaining amount is refunded
- Cancellation Within 8 Hours or After Departure
If a passenger cancels:
- Less than 8 hours before departure or
- After the train has departed
Then:
- No refund is provided
- Boarding Point Change Facility
Indian Railways established a new passenger convenience feature through its new boarding point change facility.
Passengers can change their boarding point The change is allowed up to 30 minutes before departure
This option helps passengers in cities with multiple railway stations. It provides more flexibility in planning the journey.
