Attire Highlights at the Republic Day Celebrations

The Republic Day celebrations took place throughout India which included both official ceremonies and community festivities. The public focused their attention on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen who participated in the main event dressed in their ceremonial clothing.

Prime Minister Modi’s Traditional Attire

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a Rajasthani turban as his traditional headwear for this event. The turban displayed a combination of red and yellow and purple and green shades. Gold zari patterns were woven into the fabric which created both formal and festive looks.

The red color represents both energetic power and courageous strength. Prime Minister Modi wore a dark blue and white kurta-pajama combination with his turban. His complete outfit included a light blue jacket which he wore as the final piece.

Ursula von der Leyen’s India-Inspired Dress

Ursula von der Leyen who serves as European Commission President and chief guest at the event wore a maroon dress decorated with gold designs. The outfit reflected elements of Indian culture. This choice was different from the pantsuits she usually wears at official events.Her attire matched the ceremonial atmosphere of the Republic Day celebrations.

Background and Official Visit

Ursula von der Leyen became the first female President of the European Commission when she was appointed to this position. She began her first term in 2019 and she commenced her second term in 2024. Her current term will continue until 2029. She worked as a minister for the German government from 2005 until 2019 before taking this position.

She participated in the India–EU Summit during her visit to India. India and the European Union continue their negotiations for a free trade agreement. Officials have indicated that the agreement may be finalized during this visit.
