Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, has been hospitalised following a fall at a hotel in Washington, DC.
"Leader McConnell fainted this evening at a local hotel while attending a private dinner. He has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated "a Kentucky Republican official said in a statement.
There were no other details provided.
According to a source acquainted with the situation, the fall occurred at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, DC.
The 81-year-old is the Senate's longest-serving Republican leader, noted for assisting the party in achieving key Republican goals such as stacking the Supreme Court with conservative justices, implementing Trump-era tax cuts, and repeatedly stymieing Democrats' legislative agenda.
McConnell fractured his shoulder after falling at his Kentucky home in 2019.
His hospitalisation this week comes at a time when the Senate is evenly divided, with Democrats holding a 51-49 majority.
Democratic Senators John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Dianne Feinstein of California have both been admitted to the hospital in recent weeks, with Fetterman seeking treatment for depression and Feinstein for shingles.
Feinstein said on Twitter on Tuesday that she is healing at home.
